Research Interests & Areas

My research program draws on family science, human development, and public health to explore how family systems and intimate relationships (inside and outside of families) develop and are contexts for adolescent and emerging adult well-being. I have current projects focused on three areas: (1) Family Systems and Relationships, (2) Romantic and Sexual Relationships and Experiences, and (3) Adolescent and Emerging Adult Social Networks.

My family systems and relationships research explores how these influence on adolescents and emerging adults, with an extensive focus on structurally diverse families. I am keenly interested in understanding how family systems and relationships promote resiliency and positive developmental outcomes.

I consider romantic and sexual development as normative and healthy parts of adolescents’ and emerging adults’ lives. Within this area, I have been able to illustrate how adolescents and young adults pursue (or choice not to) sex and romance, better understand what contributes to pleasurable and high-quality experiences, and contextualize how romantic and sexual involvement relate to well-being. I have also developed several new measures to advance research in adolescent and young adult romantic and sexual experiences.

My research on adolescent and emerging adult social networks is an emerging area focusing on integrating family, romantic, and peer networks as determinants of adolescent and emerging adult health. My colleagues and I have collected several sets of data capturing the dynamics across those relational domains.
