Sample Rotation Schedule

Rotation Sites

Students in the on-campus Masters/Dietetic Internship will be assigned a rotation schedule based upon the sites listed below. Most students rotate to five sites (two community, two food service, and one clinical).

Clinical Sites

  • OSF St. Joseph's Medical Center

    At OSF St. Joseph's Medical Center (Bloomington, IL), interns get exposure to the roles and duties of diet techs and dietitians and how they collaborate with other disciplines in the hospital setting. The intern learns documentation formats for medical records using EPIC software. Interns are exposed to a variety of patients at this facility and are given the opportunities to observe multiple procedures.

  • Carle Health Methodist

    Carle Health Methodist (Peoria, IL) provides a wide range of services including inpatient hospital care, outpatient services, home health, home infusion, and private duty nursing care, hospice care, and partial hospitalization services for child, adolescent, and adult mental health. Interns during their clinical rotation participate in the day-to-day nutritional care of patients including screening, completing nutrition assessments, attending patient care meetings, educating patients, and recommending nutrition support.

  • Carle Health Proctor

    Carle Health Proctor is located in Peoria, IL. Unity Point serves patients with a variety of needs: cardiac, medical, skilled nursing, emergency, intensive care, orthopedic, neurological, family maternity, and addiction recovery. They also have a large outpatient population including: outpatient surgery, lab work, diagnostic imaging, cardiopulmonary function testing, sleep disorders, and wound clinic.

  • Carle BroMenn Medical Center

    Carle Bromenn Medical Center is a community owned and operated health care system that serves the needs of both inpatient and outpatient, including community groups, home health care, and hospice care. Interns during their clinical rotation participate in the day-to-day nutrition care of patients including screening, completing nutrition assessments, attending patient care meetings, educating patients, and recommend nutrition support. The hospital is licensed for 210.

  • Decatur Memorial Hospital

    Decatur Memorial Hospital (Decatur, IL) serves the needs of both inpatients and outpatients. Interns will learn the skills of nutritional screening, assessment, and medical documentation. Working in a team environment with other dietitians, interns will have the opportunities to assist a variety of patients.

  • Memorial Medical Center

    The Memorial Medical Center (Springfield, IL) rotation will serve as a three-week requirement for all interns. The rotation is designed to provide students with opportunities to expand their knowledge of clinical nutrition care. Throughout the two weeks, interns will assess patients in various conditions and units including: burn, ICU, Renal, Psychiatric, Eating Disorders, and Transplant.

  • Hopedale Medical Complex

    Hopedale Medical Complex (Hopedale, IL) is a nearly 200-bed continuum-of-care facility, providing a variety of services to patients including an acute care hospital, nursing home, assisted and independent living, wellness center, and five satellite doctor's offices in area towns. Interns will have the opportunity to gain experiences primarily with the geriatric population while participating in long-term care assessments along with projects in clinical, community, and food service disciplines.

Food Service Sites

  • OSF St. Joseph's Medical Center

    At OSF St. Joseph's Medical Center (Bloomington, IL), interns get exposure to all areas and job duties of the Food Services Department. Interns will focus on the patient side using a Room Service concept as well as the public side in the cafeteria. Catering opportunities are available as well as wellness events.

  • District 87

    District 87 (Bloomington, IL) provides a food service management component for the ISU Dietetics Internship program. Interns rotating through this food service site will gain exposure to the National School Lunch Program, School Breakfast Program, and the Child and Adult Care Food Program. Interns will have opportunities to work with nutritional analysis of menus, development of cycle menus and standardized recipes, school food service operations, catering operations, USDA free and reduced applications and reimbursement claims, computerized point of sale operations, software troubleshooting, wellness articles for the staff newsletter, staff training, personnel recruitment, and have opportunities to attend a variety of professional meetings and food shows.

  • ISU Event Management, Dining and Hospitality

    During the rotation with Event Management, Dining and Hospitality [EMDH] interns work with the Registered Dietitian and culinary staff to plan and implement projects related to menu planning, marketing, and recipe development. EMDH utilizes CPORD's Food Service Suite, a computer software system, to perform food management functions (ordering, inventory, menu planning and analysis, recipe quantification and analysis). Additional experiences may include catering, NSLP, CACFP, university wellness events and initiatives, and food allergy management.

  • McLean County Unit District #5

    Interns at McLean County Unit District #5 (Normal, IL) will have opportunities to work with the food service of over 11,000 students in fifteen elementary schools, three junior high schools, and two high schools. Projects will include development of cycle menus, standardization of recipes, staff training, USDA free and reduced applications and reimbursement claims, and nutritional analysis of menus.

  • Decatur Memorial Hospital

    Interns completing their food service rotation at Decatur Memorial Hospital (Decatur, IL) will gain comprehensive food service management experience through proper use of human resources, coordinating procurement, production and distribution of food, developing customer service skills, and analyzing financial information.

  • Carle BroMenn Medical Center

    Carle BroMenn Medical Center is a community-owned and operated health care system that has 281 hospital beds in Normal and Eureka, Illinois. Advocate BroMenn serves the needs of both impatient and outpatient, including community groups, home health care, and hospice care. The hospital is licensed for 210.

  • Memorial Medical Center

    The Memorial Medical Center is an acute care hospital in Springfield, IL, that offers comprehensive impatient and outpatient services. Memorial Health System of Springfield is a community-based, not-for-profit corporation dedicated to patient care, education, and research.

  • Carle Health Methodist

    Founded near the turn of the century by three Methodist Deaconesses, today Carle Health Methodist (Peoria, IL) provides a wide range of services across the health care continuum, including hospital care, outpatient services, home health, home infusion, and private duty nursing care, hospice care, and partial hospitalization services for child, adolescent, and adult mental health.

  • Carle Health Proctor

Community Nutrition Sites

  • McLean County WIC

    The McLean County WIC clinic (Bloomington, IL) services McLean County and the surrounding areas. WIC provides nutrition information, breastfeeding support, and supplemental foods to pregnant women, breastfeeding and postpartum mothers, infants, and children up to the age of 5.

  • Carle Health Methodist: Outpatient Dietitian Services and Outpatient Diabetes Services

    The Carle Health Methodist Outpatient Dietitian Services (Peoria, IL) provides services, support, and education for individuals of all ages. The outpatient dietitians meet in group and individual settings to education on various nutrition-related topics. The dietitian with the Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism center (UPH Methodist Atrium) provides group and individual sessions for those diagnosed with diabetes, as well as for those who need to review or improve their diabetes management.

  • Day Care Resources, Inc

    Day Care Resources, Inc is located in Pekin, IL and administrates the Child and Adult Care Food Programs. Interns at this rotation site will create educational materials to improve nutrition at day cares throughout the state, such as newsletters, calendars, posters, lesson plans, training modules. The interns will also gain experience with menu planning, recipe development, and providing nutritional advice to support providers.

  • McLean Co Extension

    University of Illinois Extension in McLean County (Bloomington, IL) is a part of the nationwide Cooperative Extension System and is the flagship outreach effort of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign offering educational programs to residents of all of Illinois' 102 counties - and far beyond. Locally, Unit 12 Extension serves Livingston, McLean and Woodford counties. Interns participate in delivering educational programs in areas of food safety, food security, nutrition and wellness.

  • Illinois CancerCare, P.C. 

    The Illinois CancerCare, P.C. (Peoria, IL) provides free nutrition services to over 6,500 patients, survivors, and caregivers per year throughout central Illinois. Interns gain experience in individual nutrition counseling using the Nutrition Care Process to help patients tolerate treatment and relieve symptoms. Additional experiences include healthy cooking demonstrations, and wellness seminars or workshops. There are 13 cancer facilities and students get to work one-on-one with medical oncologists and their team to provide MNT.

  • Crossing Healthcare

    Crossing Healthcare (Decatur, IL) is a federally qualified, nonprofit health center that provides primary outpatient healthcare. Interns will observe healthcare services to men, women, and children of all ages without healthcare insurance. Experiences include prenatal nutrition education and chronic health conditions such as diabetes, obesity, allergies, heart disease and arthritis.
